About the Artist

Penelope Kupfer (b.1974, Germany) is a visual artist whose critical outlook of practice focuses on questions of identity, selfhood and the family under a patriarchal system. Having delayed her studies until after starting a family, motherhood has become an important aspect in her work, especially during lockdown as caring duties like home schooling were added to the completion of her MA in Painting at the Slade. Penelope’s paintings and drawings are very personal dealing with the difficult and allowing internal conflict to surface with a vocabulary of painting that goes beyond the personal story. With speediness in the making, the narrative of the works is often humorous, dark, sometimes telling identifiable embarrassing stories. Overlooked aspects of life become visible, the mundane, domesticity and motherhood are recurring themes in my work. Using the body and a cast of characters she can explore emotional and psychological mental states and their impact on the physical body. Colour and surface are a vital part of her process, in an expressionist manner the figures and their action turn into abstract forms of gestural figuration, where they can melt into a feeling or movement. Drawing from the everyday, Penelope’s characters do yoga, are trapped trying to escape and liberate themselves, they laugh and cry, they are desperate, cheeky and happy, looking at German expressionism from a female perspective. Penelope lives and works in London, UK.
