About the Artist

Jessica Frances Martin (b. 1987 Phoenix, AZ US) lives and works in Phoenix, AZ. Martin holds an MFA in Art Theory and Practice from Northwestern University and a BFA in Painting and Drawing from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Martin considers the borders between women’s inner and outer worlds. Her images are interior/ exterior explorations, playing with the boundaries between real world, fantasy, and fiction. Other themes in her work include bonds with animals, women engaged in leisure, play, and explorations of nature.

About the Artwork

This painting started as the idea of having a spider in your bed and then as I tried to articulate how to paint this idea as an image, it became something else. A woman cuddling with a giant spider is visually suggestive of many things, and I like any interpretation of it. One of my favorite paintings is Philip Guston’s Couple in Bed, and I was considering this work as I was making my painting.
