Biography
Yumi Cheung (b. 1997, Hong Kong) graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Chinese University in Hong Kong, specialising in Chinese ink painting. While trained in the revered traditional medium, Cheung surpasses its formal restrictions, inserting Japanese and contemporary influences. This fluidity extends to the subject matter of her practice, in which she investigates the infinite possibilities of the natural and temporal. She observes the most fundamental facets of nature, noting its mercurial patterning and seamless coexistence with man. Drawing from her daily experiences and surroundings, she memorialises the mundane, the quiet, and the fleeting. Painting acts as Cheung’s form of escapism and meditation, bringing her back to the basic rhythms of life.
