About the Artist

Lucy De Roepers' practice investigates how forms emerge through drawing, painting, and memory, with surfaces evolving through chance encounters between marks, gestures, and erasure. She is drawn to the instability of images; photographs, drawings and structures inform early stages, but essentially the work unfolds through physical painting and editing. The surface becomes a space where memories and earlier marks unpredictably resurface, shaping the composition. There is a balance between raw energy and structure. Recently, she has explored how hidden layers create a sense of mystery, as if something lies waiting to be revealed. Inspired by Pallasmaa’s The Eyes of the Skin, Lucy considers how viewers engage with texture, layering, and spatial atmosphere. Carl Jung’s Man and His Symbols also informs her thinking, especially around unconscious imagery and symbolic memory. Drawing is central to her process, acting as a gestural foundation. These drawings, often done in natural settings like gardens, quietly anchor and guide the evolving painting.
