Re:orient

Navigating one’s identity is a complex enough exercise, but the Chinese label, particularly in these polarizing times, can evoke entrenched prejudices and associations. Focusing on the oft-encountered failure to acknowledge the plurality of the Chinese identity and featuring artists from the Greater China region, this sale explores what it means to come from somewhere. These young artists endeavor to transcend the confines of their prescribed identities to confront, broaden and defy expectations. They explore and expand on what it means to part of the Chinese diaspora, as their chosen works reflect the possibility of art to serve as repository and arbiter of understanding, while also demonstrating the process of cultural reconnection rather than a siloed imagining of selfhood.
