About the Artist

Sophia Bharmal (b.1996, British/Asian) is a visual artist whose work exists on the threshold of dream and reality depicting seemingly inconsequential aspects of her Indian heritage that nevertheless hold the stories, culture and memories of unheard women passed down through generations. By placing these moments within a gilded setting Sophia asks her viewers to listen, no matter how disregarded or how valueless the place they would ordinarily occupy. The drawings are a universe of shared symbols and a place of refuge for the children of immigrants, where they no longer feel the expectations of two societies. Collectively, colour and Architecture are the basis of Sophia's settings, drawing inspiration from the carpets, patterned sheets, embroidered curtains and layers of fabric which decorate our households within the UK, bringing a faint glimmer of home within the grey British suburbs and introducing a new way of living within a domestic setting. These drawings use the same technique of dressing to add colour and life, mirroring places left in memory. Sophia lives and works in London, UK.
