About the Artist

Lisandro Suriel (b.1990, Netherlands) is a contemporary visual artist whose current project, Ghost Island, seeks to build a framework with which to document and process the dynamic and unseen influences of Caribbean identity. As a documentary of Black imagination, Ghost Island posits the Black subconscious as a device for reconfiguring collective memory and reclaiming histories. Growing up as a child in the Dutch Caribbean (Saint Martin), no formal institution ever introduced the idea that Black history and identity might extend beyond being a descendent of slavery. Lisandro lives and works in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
