About the Artist
Xu Yang (b.1999, UK) is a multi-disciplinary visual artist whose practice explores personal interests, childhood fantasies, fetish and identity through painting, digital & film photography and mixed medias. Like Judith Butler mentioned Gender as constructed identity, Yang considers our actions are based on the past experiences, exploring the mask and the act of free will. This performativity nature of her works allows Yang to use her body to bring fantasies into reality. Yang is heavily inspired by Berthe Morisot and Frida Kahlo, by observing how female figures are portrayed in the history under the male gaze like Velázquez, Boucher, Sorolla. Yang paints for showing the vulnerability of women as well as giving the independency and privacy back to female figures. She lives and works in London, UK.
