About the Artist
Birk Thomassen (b. 1989, Denmark) is a Danish visual artist working primarily with the concepts of freedom and identity, whether in a broad, abstract sense, in relation to sexuality and religion, or in a more concrete and physical manner, looking at bodies, borders and carnality. In his personal work Birk views the camera as a tool in a post-photographic contemporary context, in which the camera, prevalent everywhere and accessible to everyone in the digital age, can no longer be accepted as an objective interpreter of truth. This creates a field of tension between fiction and reality, which is the most appealing and relevant aspect of photography for Birk, affording him to reflect an edited version of reality back to the viewer by obstructing the myth of the camera as a mediator between reality and image. Birk lives and works in Copenhagen.
