About the Artist
Cara Lasell Bonewitz (b. 1986, USA) is a multi-disciplinary artist who has been developing an ongoing body of work centered around the harvest, representation, and manipulation of seaweed. Captivated by the tactile qualities of seaweed and the process of collecting it, Bonewitz gathers the plant from local beaches and then experiments with different chemical and physical treatments in order to preserve their malleability and luminosity. She then attempts, through the processes available to her—be they stitching, weaving, gluing, photography, or representation in graphite—to recreate the beauty she observed upon her initial discovery of the plants in their natural environment. The resulting work is a transplanted approximation of natural beauty limited by the realities of an unnatural environment. Cara lives and works in California, USA.
