About the Artist

Thénie Khatchatourov Born in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1989, I am a contemporary visual artist whose work serves as a bridge between individuals and transcends borders, yet is deeply rooted in the lands and traditions of my Armenian ancestors. Symbols—primordial and universal—lie at the core of my artistic expression, guiding my aesthetic research. While sacred subjects are increasingly neglected or even desecrated in contemporary art, I find myself drawn to their significance, reinterpreting mystical themes in a modern context to create a dialogue between past and present. Themes such as love, death, birth, war, and peace pervade my artwork, emerging through collages of evocative and symbolic elements in both vivid colors and pared-down monochrome. My preferred mediums, including lead pencil, lend my drawings a stone-carving quality that echoes the celebrated craftsmanship of Armenian masons, giving form and volume to abstract concepts. In my paintings, I often work in monochrome or neutral tones—black, grey, beige, and white—capturing a connection to the timeless, epic, and mythical. With degrees from the University of Geneva and HES-SO/ECAL, I have developed my practice through solo and group exhibitions, refining a multidisciplinary approach that spans drawing, engraving, textile, and sculpture. My work speaks to the resilience of memory and cultural preservation, challenging the impact of market forces on art while aiming to protect collective narratives, especially in times of conflict. I live and work in Geneva, Switzerland, continuing to explore ways to keep the traditions and symbols of my heritage alive for future generations.
