About the Artist
Lily Alice Baker (b.1998, UK) is a painter, based in South London and a graduate of Goldsmiths University. Her paintings are based in an intuitive gestural style anchored to the human figure. Baker uses gesture as an extension of her own body and the visceral oil paint acts as a physical rejection of the discourse of the hermetically-sealed female body. Baker’s work draws on the theatricality of human interaction, the dreamlike euphoria, exaggerated and juxtaposed by the eeriness of what goes on in the shadows, which evokes a romanticism seen in paintings of the Baroque period, such as Fragonard’s The Swing.
