Biography

Yaya Yajie Liang (b.1995, China) lives and works in London. She considers painting as complex rhizomatic structures; a movement that continually repeats “becoming”. Her work are studies on momentary sensation, perception, storytelling and material. The restorative investment in animality and a queer use of time and space become the bricks on which to build this visual labyrinth in her practice. In the field of pure intensities where forces clash, converge and generate, the endless metaphors and representations in culture are decoded, metamorphosed, and, encountering personal narratives from minority groups, reassembled into paths of escape from the convention or stereotypes that exist on canvas for a long time. In pursuit of revolutionary conditions possible by means of stammering and stuttering typical signifying regimes, she gets references from marginal beasts in archaic myth to unjust and violent narratives on minorities in contemporary daily life. In recent work, Yajie has used the idea of cavalier perspective from Chinese traditional painting as a means of re-ordering structure and dimensionality within the painting. The viewing of painting becomes a dance of eyes, and the not well-planned composition establishes a sense of nomadic movement. Yaya lives and works in London, UK.
