Biography

Clare Rees-Hales (b.1986, British) is a contemporary figurative painter, who lives and works in London. She co-founded and studied at the alternative art school ‘The School of the Damned’ and recently completed the Turps Studio Programme, an intensive two-year painting course at Turps Art School, London. She makes psychologically charged paintings and drawings which explore women’s interior and exterior worlds. The women in her paintings exhibit confidence and power in their solitude. It is as if their inner voice is loud but hard to hear. Her works borrow from the language of Western art history, depicting subjects in a way that enforces a sense of claustrophobia - kicking back against the patriarchal forces that have brought them to be. Clare lives and works in London, UK.
