Biography

Charlie Schaffer (b.1992, UK) lives and works in West London, UK. He almost exclusively paints people - either those he already knows or those that he feels have an openness about them and would like to get to know through the process of spending time with them. His paintings take a long time, and the painting itself ends up being more of a record of the time spent with one another rather than the sole purpose of the experience itself. The Old Masters are a continuing source of inspiration; along with artists such as Freud, Auerbach, Celia Paul, Alice Neel, Leon Kossoff, Giacometti and David Bomberg. Charlie is the 2019 BP Portrait Award winner for Imara in her Winter Coat, selected from 2,538 submissions from 84 countries.
