Biography

Bethany Farmer (b.1997, UK) is a British artist whose practice includes painting, life drawing and photography. In recent years she has worked primarily in ceramic sculpture and black and white photography. Within her work she focuses on the concept of identity in both forms it reveals itself; through outward relationships, primarily familial turbulence, in addition to humans’ inward relationship with themselves- calling attention to the notion of the self and the body as separate beings, the ‘self’ and the ‘other’. Reminiscent of eighteenth and nineteenth century nude photography, her figurative work conveys the bodies of faceless women. Intended as a commemoration of the uncensored human form yet retaining enough distance from the lens, she ensures the figures subsume no identity, allowing the viewer to relate to the ‘other’. Bethany lives and works in Dundee, Scotland.
